{"id":2324,"date":"2019-08-02T13:29:08","date_gmt":"2019-08-02T18:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/safepettreats.com\/blog\/?p=2324"},"modified":"2019-08-02T13:35:11","modified_gmt":"2019-08-02T18:35:11","slug":"fda-alert-do-not-buy-or-feed-any-pig-ear-pet-treats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/safepettreats.com\/blog\/fda-alert-do-not-buy-or-feed-any-pig-ear-pet-treats\/","title":{"rendered":"FDA Alert | Do not Buy or Feed ANY Pig Ear Pet Treats"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>After the recent pig ear product recalls by Pet Supplies Plus and <a href=\"https:\/\/safepettreats.com\/blog\/lennox-intl-inc-recall-july-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Lennox Intl Inc<\/a>, the FDA and CDC are now advising consumers to avoid all pig ear pet treats and retailers to stop selling all pig ear treats at this time. <br><br>From the FDA website: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is coordinating with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state agencies to investigate 127 human cases of salmonellosis related to several types of&nbsp;<em>Salmonella<\/em>&nbsp;with a suspected link to pig ear pet treats, some of which originated from Argentina and Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FDA and CDC are advising consumers to avoid all pig ear pet treats and retailers to stop selling all pig ear treats at this time. Lennox Intl Inc., a distributor of pig ear pet treats,\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/expanded-lennox-intl-inc-voluntary-recalling-natural-pig-ears-july-26-2019\" target=\"_blank\">has recalled<\/a>\u00a0some of the treats involved in this outbreak. Recently, Pet Supplies Plus also initiated a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/pet-supplies-plus-issues-consumer-advisory-bulk-pig-ear-product-fda-investigating-contaminated-pig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">recall of bulk pig ears<\/a>\u00a0after samples tested by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development tested positive for\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe FDA takes seriously our responsibility to protect both human and animal health,\u201d said Steven M. Solomon, D.V.M., M.P.H., director of the FDA\u2019s Center for Veterinary Medicine. \u201cMultiple products have tested positive for numerous types of&nbsp;<em>Salmonella<\/em>resulting in two company recalls to date. Given this and the links to human illness, we believe the most effective way to protect public health at this time is to warn consumers to avoid purchasing or feeding their pets all pig ear treats and for retailers not to sell these products. We also continue to advise those who may have come into contact with potentially contaminated products to practice safe hygiene, including thoroughly washing hands and disinfecting any surfaces that have touched pig ear pet treats. The FDA will provide additional updates as our investigation further progresses.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outbreak Investigation Summary<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The FDA has traced back some of the pig ear treats associated with cases of illness to sources in Argentina and Brazil. Two firms have recalled their products. Samples of  these treats have tested positive for\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>, and further testing is ongoing to identify the specific\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0fingerprint.<\/li><li>The  FDA is working with affected firms to remove pig ear pet treats from the  marketplace and identify places where they may have been distributed.<\/li><li>Testing has identified several\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0types in pig ear pet treats, including\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0enterica serotypes I 4,[5],12:i:-, Infantis, London, and Newport.<\/li><li>On July 3, Pet Supplies Plus notified the public about a\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/pet-supplies-plus-issues-consumer-advisory-bulk-pig-ear-product-fda-investigating-contaminated-pig\" target=\"_blank\">recall<\/a>\u00a0of all bulk pig ear products supplied to all its retail locations by several      different vendors, including Lennox Intl Inc.<\/li><li>On  July 26, Lennox Intl Inc. issued a public notification about a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/lennox-intl-inc-voluntary-recalling-natural-pig-ears-july-26-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">recall<\/a>\u00a0of  its products. On July 30, the firm expanded that recall and issued  an\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/safety\/recalls-market-withdrawals-safety-alerts\/expanded-lennox-intl-inc-voluntary-recalling-natural-pig-ears-july-26-2019\" target=\"_blank\">additional public notification<\/a>.<br><br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advice for\nConsumers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The FDA and CDC recommend that people avoid purchasing or feeding any pig ear pet treats  at this time. This recommendation may change as more information becomes  available.<\/li><li>If  you have pig ear treats, throw them away in a secure container where  animals, including wildlife, cannot access it. Wash your hands thoroughly  and disinfect any surfaces that have come into contact with potentially contaminated products.<\/li><li>In general, if you choose to feed treats like pig ears, practice good hygiene by: monitoring your pet while they have the treat, picking up the treat when they are done with it, keeping treats away from small children, cleaning the areas the treat contacted, washing hands, and not allowing your pet to lick you, your family members, or surfaces in your home.<\/li><li><em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0can affect both human and animal health. People with symptoms of\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0infection should consult their healthcare providers. Consult a veterinarian if your pet has symptoms of\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em>\u00a0infection.<br><br><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outbreak\nInvestigation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>CDC reports 127 people infected with the outbreak serotypes of\u00a0<em>Salmonella<\/em><\/li><li>Illnesses have been reported from 33 states: AL, AZ, CA, CO, CT, FL, GA, HI, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OR, PA, SC, TX, UT, WA, and WI.<\/li><li>Cases date from 2015 to the present.<\/li><li>There have been 26 people hospitalized.<\/li><li> No deaths have been reported.  <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p> This is an ongoing investigation and the FDA will provide the public with new information as it becomes available.\u00a0 <br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/fda-newsroom\/fda-fast-facts-fda-advises-consumers-not-purchase-or-feed-and-retailers-not-sell-any-pig-ear-pet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Click here<\/a> for the FDA website announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the recent pig ear product recalls by Pet Supplies Plus and Lennox Intl Inc, the FDA and CDC are now advising consumers to avoid all pig ear pet treats and retailers to stop selling all pig ear treats at this time.
